Publix Super Markets is moving forward with a substantial expansion of its primary distribution and logistics campus in West Lakeland, Florida, committing $200 million to a multi-phase buildout. The project underscores Lakeland’s role as the central supply chain hub for the grocer, which serves thousands of stores across the Southeastern United States.
The planned expansion will add a new warehouse distribution facility of just over 400,000 square feet, according to the company. The program also includes a 58,000-square-foot return center, designed to support the flow of goods back through the network alongside outbound distribution activity.
Publix’s existing campus in West Lakeland has been operating for years and already encompasses more than 1.1 million square feet of logistics and distribution space. The new phases will layer additional capacity onto this footprint, positioning the campus for higher volume and broader service coverage within the retailer’s regional network.
The Tampa Business Journal reported that Publix acquired the expansion site along Allen K. Breed Highway in late 2023 for $8.25 million. The tract sits adjacent to the existing campus, enabling a contiguous expansion of the operation rather than a dispersed network of separate facilities.
Gray Construction has been engaged as the general contractor for the project. The firm will oversee delivery of both the new warehouse and the return center as Publix sequences construction across multiple phases at the Lakeland logistics campus.
Publix currently operates 10 distribution centers, with more than half located in Florida. Within the Tampa Bay area, the grocer runs distribution facilities in both Lakeland and Sarasota. The company also maintains 10 manufacturing plants, and half of those are located in Lakeland as well, reinforcing the city’s position as a core production and distribution node for the brand.
The Lakeland expansion aligns with Publix’s broader supply chain footprint in Florida and the Southeast, adding incremental square footage at a campus that already functions as a primary logistics hub. By consolidating additional distribution and returns processing capacity in West Lakeland, Publix is deepening its operational presence in a market that anchors both its manufacturing and its grocery network in the region.
