The Williams Companies has acquired the 64-story Williams Tower in Houston, purchasing the landmark office property for $300 million. The glass-encased tower, located at 2800 Post Oak Blvd. just south of The Galleria mall, totals approximately 1.4 million square feet of office space. The deal gives the Omaha-based midstream energy company ownership of the tower that already carries its corporate name.
According to reporting cited from the Houston Business Journal, Williams’ connection to the building dates back several decades. The company first became involved with the tower in 1995, when it acquired Transco Energy Co., which at that time was the building’s named anchor tenant, in a $3 billion transaction. A few years later, in 1999, the building was officially renamed Williams Tower, aligning the property’s branding with its major corporate tenant relationship.
In the current transaction, Invesco sold the tower to The Williams Companies. Invesco was advised by Eastdil Secured in connection with the sale, underscoring the institutional profile of both the seller and the transaction process. While ownership has now changed hands, Williams has indicated that it does not plan to relocate its headquarters from Tulsa to the Houston tower.
Looking ahead, The Williams Companies plans to invest additional capital into Williams Tower and the surrounding property. The company intends to add new amenities that will serve both its own employees and other tenants in the building. These planned investments come at a time when the tower is already reporting a solid occupancy position, with the property currently about 83% leased.
Williams Tower has long been a prominent feature of the Houston skyline. The property was originally developed by Hines and reached completion in 1983, reflecting several decades of institutional ownership and operation as a major Uptown-area office asset. The tower’s combination of height, scale, and location near a major regional shopping destination has helped establish its profile within the Houston office market.
This latest acquisition consolidates Williams’ relationship with its namesake building by moving the company from tenant-affiliated user to direct owner. With committed investment plans for amenities and an already high leased percentage, the transaction positions Williams Tower for continued relevance as a significant office destination for corporate tenants in Houston.
