E Ink has begun construction on an expansion of its U.S. headquarters at the Billerica Innovation Center in Billerica, MA. The facility serves as a key global research and development hub for the company and is currently home to more than 260 employees. The latest project will increase the campus footprint, reinforcing the role of the Billerica site within E Ink’s global operations.
The company, described as an originator, pioneer and global commercial leader in ePaper technology, is using the expansion to deepen its innovation capabilities in the United States. The Billerica Innovation Center functions as a central location for advancing E Ink’s technology platform, supporting product development efforts that serve customers across international markets.
Paul Apen, E Ink’s chief business and operations officer, said that growing the Billerica campus enhances the firm’s ability to drive technology innovation domestically while serving customers around the world. He also noted that the project is expected to contribute to the ongoing growth of the local economy and the surrounding innovation community, underscoring the headquarters’ importance beyond the company’s internal operations.
Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed by March 2027. E Ink is receiving support on the project from NV5 Planning & Design, Inc., IF Design L.L.C., and SPEC Process Engineering & Construction, Inc. These firms are providing services that will help deliver the additional space at the Billerica Innovation Center on the stated timeline.
E Ink was originally spun out of the MIT Media Lab in 1997 and has maintained its headquarters in Billerica since its inception. The decision to expand at the existing campus continues that long-standing presence in the community. By adding to a site that already houses hundreds of employees and serves as a global R&D center, the company is reinforcing its commitment to the Billerica location as a strategic base for its ePaper technology business.
