Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is shifting its U.S. headquarters from New Jersey to Plano and plans to move about 1,000 employees as part of the relocation. Company employees were notified of the decision last week, and the transition is expected to be completed before the end of the year. Samsung has not yet disclosed the specific site in Plano that will house the new headquarters operations.
The relocation follows Samsung’s recent investment in a new corporate campus in Englewood, New Jersey. According to reporting cited from the Dallas Business Journal, the company finished a 321,000-square-foot campus there less than a year ago, which makes the timing of the headquarters move notable. The article does not indicate how Samsung plans to use the Englewood campus once the headquarters functions are transferred to Texas.
Samsung already maintains a substantial operational footprint in Central Texas. The company operates a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Austin, which anchors its presence in the region. In addition, Samsung is investing billions of dollars in a new chipmaking facility in Taylor, a project that further deepens its manufacturing and employment base in the area. The expansion of production assets in Central Texas provides a backdrop for the decision to concentrate corporate functions in Plano.
Plano has emerged as a hub for large corporate users and continues to attract major relocations. The city is home to a significant telecommunications presence through Ericsson and is slated to host AT&T’s new 2 million-square-foot campus, where AT&T plans to bring 10,000 jobs. These commitments add to a roster of sizeable corporate campuses in Plano for companies such as Toyota, Liberty Mutual, JPMorgan Chase, PepsiCo and Yum Brands. The accumulation of headquarters and large office users underscores Plano’s role as a key employment center within the greater Dallas region.
While specific real estate details of Samsung’s new Plano headquarters have not yet been released, the move aligns the company’s corporate leadership more closely with its Texas manufacturing platform and places it alongside a concentration of other large corporate occupiers. Market participants will be watching for additional information on the location, ownership structure and any new facilities associated with the headquarters relocation.
