The Washington Commanders and architecture firm HKS have released a new round of renderings for the NFL team’s planned $3.8 billion stadium. The latest images build on an initial design package unveiled in January, which introduced a pillared venue topped by a translucent, concave roof.
The updated visuals focus on how the proposed stadium would fit into the former RFK Stadium site in D.C., offering additional perspectives on the structure and its surroundings. The design emphasizes a roof enclosure that would allow the facility to support a wider range of uses and events beyond the regular football season.
According to a statement from the Commanders, the latest renderings are intended to reinforce the organization’s goal of creating both a neighborhood gathering place and a national stage. The concept positions the venue as a hub for community programming and large-scale events that extend beyond game days, reflecting a broader push to integrate the stadium into the daily life of the surrounding area.
The new imagery is being used as part of the federal approval process, highlighting the regulatory steps required before full redevelopment of the RFK site can move forward. As part of this process, the team and HKS are showcasing how open space and public access would be incorporated into the plan.
Green space and outdoor activation feature prominently in the latest materials. The front plaza is depicted as a flexible zone that could support tailgating, pre- and post-game fan engagement, and other community gatherings. These programmed outdoor areas are designed to complement the stadium’s indoor capacity and help extend the use of the site throughout the year.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has backed the inclusion of a roof, citing its potential to enable year-round programming within the stadium. A covered venue can accommodate a broader mix of entertainment and civic events, which in turn can help sustain activity at the site outside the football calendar.
The new stadium is planned to accommodate up to 65,000 spectators. Beyond the venue itself, the broader redevelopment vision for the RFK site calls for a mixed-use environment that incorporates retail, entertainment, and residential components. This mixed-use program is intended to create a destination that supports both event-day demand and more regular neighborhood use.
The Commanders and HKS anticipate that the stadium could open by 2030, subject to the completion of the federal review process and subsequent development milestones. While detailed phasing, financing structures, and tenant rosters have not yet been disclosed, the current materials signal continued progress in advancing the project from concept renderings toward entitlement and implementation.
