**Proposed Retail and Dining District Eyed for Georgia International Plaza Ahead of Major Events**
An agency responsible for the successful development of The Battery Atlanta is now setting its sights on a new project at Georgia International Plaza. The proposal calls for the creation of approximately 100,000 square feet of retail space on a currently undeveloped grassy area, with plans to transform the site into a vibrant entertainment district featuring up to 12 restaurants. The goal is to have the area revitalized in time for the 2028 Super Bowl.
This new development would be located just outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons, and comes as Atlanta also prepares to host the 2026 World Cup.
While no budget or specific funding sources have been announced for the retail project, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority — the agency behind the initiative — has previously demonstrated success in large-scale developments. Notably, it played a key role in bringing the Signia by Hilton Atlanta hotel to fruition, primarily through the use of revenue bonds.
The proposed entertainment district would mirror the mixed-use community of The Battery Atlanta, which sits adjacent to Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves. That development includes a 264-room hotel, residential apartments, office space, shops, bars, and restaurants, all contributing to the area’s strong year-round foot traffic.
Atlanta’s role as a host city for high-profile global sporting events continues to drive growth and development in the downtown area, positioning it as a hub for both business and leisure.
