Skender has recently finished the construction of Fifth City Commons, a 60,000-square-foot affordable housing complex located at 3155 West 5th Avenue in Chicago’s West Side. This development consists of 43 units and was built to meet Passive House standards for sustainable energy use.
The primary goal of this project is to provide affordable housing options for East Garfield Park residents with incomes ranging from 30% to 80% of the area’s median income. The site where Fifth City Commons now stands had been vacant for many years before Skender took on its redevelopment in collaboration with joint venture partner Ashlaur Construction.
In fact, this project was selected by the City of Chicago as part of the C40 Reinventing Competition for Cities in order to encourage municipalities worldwide to repurpose vacant land into sustainable and net-zero developments. The new three-story building includes community rooms, a resident terrace and fitness room, laundry facilities, on-site management offices as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
Skender worked closely with Nia Architects and Perkins&Will along with engineering firms dbHMS,Rubinos & Mesia Engineers,Omni Ecosystems, and TERRA Engineering during this process. With their combined efforts,Fifth City Commons has become an important addition that will benefit both residents and the surrounding community. This latest achievement further solidifies Skender’s commitment towards creating innovative solutions that promote sustainability while addressing pressing social issues such as affordable housing.
