Target to Open New Store at Bastrop’s Sendero Mixed-Use Development Near Austin

Target to Add Austin-Area Store
CRE Market Beat Take
Target’s planned Bastrop store within a sizable mixed-use program underscores continued retailer and service-tenant appetite for suburban Austin growth corridors, adding new competitive supply to the region’s retail landscape.

Target Corp. is planning to open a new store within Sendero, a 75-acre retail development in Bastrop. The proposed store would be located at the intersection of State Highway 71 and Farm to Market Road 969, a site roughly 35 miles east of Austin. While specific details about the Target store itself have not been disclosed, its addition would further expand the retailer’s presence in the broader Austin-area market.

Sendero is designed as a mixed-use destination with a significant retail and services component. Plans for the project call for approximately 250,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, supported by more than 100,000 square feet of medical and wellness office space. The development also includes 782 apartments and a hotel, positioning the project as a substantial new node of commercial and residential activity in Bastrop.

The Austin Business Journal reports that the City of Bastrop is considering an economic incentive package for Pearl River Cos., the developer of Sendero. Details of the potential incentive package have not been made public, but the consideration of such support underscores the city’s interest in securing the project and its associated employment, tax base, and service offerings.

Target has been steadily building out its store network in the region. In addition to the Bastrop store now under consideration, the retailer has recently added locations in Liberty Hill and Dripping Springs. These openings, together with the planned Sendero location, indicate a broader regional rollout strategy focused on high-growth communities surrounding Austin.

Bastrop and Bastrop County together have a population of about 119,000 residents, providing a growing customer base for both Target and the broader tenant mix at Sendero. The scale of the project, with large-format retail and restaurant space alongside multifamily units, hotel accommodations, and medical and wellness offices, suggests that the development is intended to serve not only local residents but also shoppers and visitors from the surrounding area.

Sendero has already attracted a diverse group of tenants across dining, hospitality, and healthcare-related uses. Confirmed tenants include Chuy’s, Westlake Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, Jersey Mike’s, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Texas Roadhouse, Scooter’s Coffee, and a dual-branded Marriott hotel. These commitments indicate meaningful pre-leasing and brand interest in the Bastrop corridor as the project continues to advance.
