New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officially broke ground Thursday on the Dyer Avenue deck-overs — the first phase of a $10 billion project to replace the aging Midtown Bus Terminal.

This historic overhaul marks the beginning of a comprehensive plan to replace the existing 75-year-old terminal, which is widely regarded as functionally obsolete. The deck-over construction will allow for future terminal development while maintaining uninterrupted bus service during the multi-phase build.

Once completed, the revamped campus will feature a new, state-of-the-art main bus terminal, a separate facility dedicated to bus storage and staging, and new ramps connecting directly to the Lincoln Tunnel. The design includes the permanent closure of a portion of 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues to transform it into an integrated pedestrian-friendly zone.

Additional highlights of the project include a central main entrance for easier commuter access, expanded street-facing retail space, a multi-level indoor atrium, and new public open recreational areas, all aimed at revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood.

“It is incredibly satisfying to break ground on the first stage of construction of a new Midtown Bus Terminal that will improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of daily commuters between New Jersey and New York, and greatly improve the community hosting it,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.

The redevelopment marks one of the most ambitious transit infrastructure efforts in the region and underscores a renewed investment in modern, commuter-focused transportation systems.
