Construction is underway on Eastland Sports Campus, a new recreation-focused development planned as a major anchor within the broader Eastland Yards project. The campus is designed as a 29-acre sports destination that will combine sizable indoor and outdoor facilities with year-round programming potential.
The plan calls for a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports center that can accommodate 10 full-size basketball courts. In addition to basketball, the indoor space is structured to support a variety of court-based sports and events, underscoring the project’s focus on flexible athletic use. Outside, the campus will feature six soccer fields with multipurpose configurations, allowing the fields to host a range of field sports and community activities.
Partners on the project include Edge Sports Global, BIC (Bolton, Ivory, Cantey) and Charlotte Soccer Academy. Each group is participating in the effort to bring a large-scale, organized sports platform to Eastland Yards, positioning the campus as a central amenity for both competitive athletics and community recreation. The project is expected to serve club teams, tournaments and local users once fully delivered.
According to reporting from the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Eastland Sports Campus is expected to cost $67.1 million to construct. City government has committed $30 million toward the project, allocated as $20 million for construction and $10 million for site improvements. The city council formally approved this funding package in summer 2023, providing a public capital commitment that helps advance the build-out of the campus within the larger Eastland Yards plan.
Development is being phased. The six outdoor soccer fields are scheduled to be built first, with an estimated construction timeline of about eight months. These fields are expected to open ahead of the indoor component, giving the campus an initial operating presence while the rest of the facilities are completed. The indoor sports center is projected to require approximately 12 to 14 months to build once its phase begins.
The full Eastland Sports Campus is expected to deliver in 2028, aligning with the longer-range build-out of Eastland Yards. As the sports complex comes online, it is anticipated to function as a key recreational hub within the redevelopment, drawing consistent traffic and activity to the site.
Eastland Yards itself is a public-private venture targeting the transformation of roughly 80 acres at the former Eastland Mall site into a community-centered district. The vision for the redevelopment calls for a mix of housing, retail, park space and public facilities, supported by amenities such as the new sports campus. By reusing the former mall property for a diversified program of uses, Eastland Yards is intended to evolve into a multiuse district organized around residential, commercial and civic components.
Within that broader framework, Eastland Sports Campus represents the recreation and sports anchor for the project. With substantial indoor court capacity and multiple multipurpose fields, the campus is positioned to complement future housing and retail, as well as planned park and public spaces, and to help establish Eastland Yards as a destination within the surrounding community once the full redevelopment is realized.
