BayCare Health System has reached the construction topping out milestone for its $563 million hospital project in Palmetto, marking a key step toward delivering new healthcare capacity for the community. The health system began work on the facility last April, when it broke ground on the site along Moccasin Wallow Road, and the project has now moved from vertical construction toward interior build-out and systems installation.
The hospital is planned as a 463,000-square-foot acute care facility scheduled to open near the end of 2028. Initial plans call for 154 private patient rooms, with the building designed to expand to more than 200 beds as patient volumes increase over time. The configuration of private rooms is intended to support modern care protocols and infection control while allowing the hospital to scale up as demand evolves.
Once operational, the Palmetto hospital will offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services. Clinical programs are expected to include emergency care, general and specialty surgery, cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and diagnostic and interventional imaging. The facility will also feature a neonatal intensive care unit, positioning the campus to serve higher-acuity maternal and infant care needs in the surrounding area.
BayCare Health System is leading the hospital project, with Robins & Morton engaged as the general contractor overseeing construction. The topping out milestone indicates that the structural frame has been completed, allowing work to transition toward enclosure, mechanical systems, and interior spaces that will house patient rooms, operating suites, diagnostic areas, and support functions.
In addition to the main hospital, BayCare plans to deliver a 46,000-square-foot BayCare HealthHub on the same campus, targeted to open in late 2026. The HealthHub concept is structured as a specialized, one-stop setting where patients can access primary care, select specialty services, physical therapy, imaging, and digital health tools in a single location. These hubs are being rolled out across the region to coordinate services in a more convenient outpatient format.
The earlier opening of the HealthHub ahead of the hospital is expected to establish the campus as an active healthcare destination before full inpatient operations commence. As both facilities move forward on staggered timelines, the development represents a significant expansion of BayCare’s physical footprint and clinical capabilities in Palmetto.
