**City of Austin Continues Buying Spree with Major Property Purchase**
The City of Austin is favoring a strategy of acquisition over new construction when it comes to expanding its real estate portfolio. Rather than investing time and resources into building new offices and facilities, the city has opted to purchase existing properties.
According to the Austin Business Journal, local officials have approved the purchase of 11 properties totaling 2.4 million square feet. These properties include office buildings, warehouses, storage spaces, and parking lots. Of the 2.4 million square feet, approximately 435,000 square feet are dedicated to offices and warehouses, with the remaining space primarily serving as parking. The collective purchase will not exceed $41.1 million.
The seller, Karlin Real Estate, acquired the properties from BAE Systems in 2020.
This marks the city’s ninth major real estate acquisition since December 2023. The newly acquired assets are expected to serve a range of municipal functions, including administrative offices, industrial operations, and special-use facilities.
