Boston has been identified as a leader in climate change resilience, with initiatives that bolster sustainability and attract real estate occupants even amid climate risks. According to a new analysis from CBRE, other North American cities showing strong climate resilience include Austin, Denver, Montreal, New York City, Ottawa San Francisco Toronto Washington D.C., and Winnipeg. These cities have committed to carbon neutrality or net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through renewable energy utilization and adaptation/mitigation strategies.
The study evaluated factors such as emissions-reduction targets; policy frameworks; retrofitting costs; vulnerability to climate-related disasters; green building presence – among others – in order to determine the most resilient cities in North America for 2021. Rob Bernard (Chief Sustainability Officer at CBRE) noted: “Those who take the lead on sustainability today will have an edge over competitors when transitioning towards a low carbon future”
