GM has announced it will close its Arizona IT Innovation Center in Chandler before the end of the year, resulting in 936 job losses. Affected employees have an opportunity to apply for other openings at GM and can expect outplacement support. The 170,000-square-foot office opened in 2014 and served GM’s IT needs including web technologies, end-user applications, dealer and factory systems as well as vehicle technology. It is unclear what the future holds for this facility.
In addition to Arizona’s center there are three additional U.S.-based IT centers located in Atlanta (Georgia), Austin (Texas) and Warren (Michigan). Earlier this year 5,000 salaried workers accepted a voluntary separation program offering payouts such as health coverage or other benefits over a limited period of time if they chose to leave their positions with GM voluntarily .
