Chris Fowler: Walker Webcast - Calling Play-by-Plays & Scaling Mountains

With 37 years of experience in the sports industry, Chris Fowler has covered a wide range of events from NCAA men’s basketball tournaments to the Triple Crown. When Walker & Dunlop CEO Willy Walker asked him which sport was his favorite, Fowler had an answer ready – it’s a tie between college football and tennis.

Fowler described college football as “the ultimate team sport” with 22 players and “controlled chaos on a field,” while tennis is “just two people on a court.” He considers himself fortunate for having been able to call championship events at both these sports.

On his podcast series, however, he goes beyond just calling play-by-plays; one such episode featured Lance Armstrong who opened up about his experiences candidly. Another guest was Wasfia Nazreen – the first Bangladeshi to reach K2 summit and scale all Seven Summits – whose mountaineering career began after being inspired by The Dalai Lama himself!  Fowler also recounted an unexpected luncheon with Bono during this conversation before weighing in on Southeast’s dominance in college football as well as long-term implications of NCAA’s Name Image Likeness (NIL) policy and transfer portal for democratizing the sport – something that remains yet to be determined according to him.
