Prysmian North America is moving forward with a large-scale expansion of its manufacturing footprint in Catawba County, committing more than $1 billion to grow its operations at the company’s existing factory in Claremont. The project will add 900,000 square feet to the current facility and is expected to significantly increase the plant’s production capacity and employment base. The company expects to create more than 385 additional jobs at the site, which is located about 15 miles from Charlotte.
The expansion program calls for multiple new components on the Claremont campus. Plans include a new glass manufacturing facility, which will support the company’s production of advanced fiber products, as well as added cable production capacity to meet rising demand from communications and energy customers. Prysmian will also enlarge its research and development center at the site, with the goal of enhancing its ability to design and test next-generation cable and connectivity solutions. Project completion is targeted for 2030.
Prysmian North America is part of Prysmian, the Milan-headquartered parent company that is recognized as the world’s largest manufacturer of cables and systems serving the energy and telecommunications sectors. The Claremont plant produces fiber-optic cable, a core component in broadband expansion and in the build-out of 5G and future 6G wireless networks. The plant’s output also supports high-capacity digital infrastructure that underpins data transmission for a range of users across the country.
According to Prysmian, the company is a key supplier to the data center industry, providing critical cabling and connectivity products that support large-scale digital facilities. The Claremont expansion is intended to bolster the firm’s ability to respond to growing demand from data center operators and network providers as they continue to add capacity. By increasing both manufacturing scale and research capabilities at a single location, the project is designed to align production and innovation in support of the company’s broader North American growth strategy.
The investment in Catawba County underscores how digital infrastructure requirements are driving new industrial development tied to fiber production and advanced connectivity equipment. With a sizable square-footage addition, expanded R&D activity, and a multi-year build-out timeline, the Claremont facility’s expansion illustrates the long-term planning horizon required to match manufacturing capacity with evolving broadband, wireless, and data center needs across the United States.
