Harbor Island West Marina has officially broken ground on a $70 million redevelopment, marking the start of a multi-year effort to upgrade one of San Diego Bay’s long-standing waterfront destinations. The project is designed to improve the bayfront experience for recreational boaters, marine-oriented businesses and the broader San Diego community.
Development leaders, Port of San Diego officials and project partners gathered at the marina to commemorate the start of construction. The ceremony highlighted the scale of the planned improvements, which focus on modernizing marina infrastructure and opening up additional public access along the bay. The redevelopment is positioned as a significant step in the ongoing evolution of the waterfront, with an emphasis on both functionality for boaters and accessibility for residents and visitors.
Speaking at the event, Eric Leslie, CEO of Beauchamp Leslie Development & Management, described the project as a forward-looking investment in San Diego Bay. He noted that the redevelopment is being undertaken in close coordination with community partners, with the goal of creating an anchor waterfront destination that offers more comfortable and contemporary amenities. Leslie underscored that improved access for boaters and the public is central to the development plan.
Beauchamp Leslie has a long history at the site, having leased and operated Harbor Island West Marina from the Port of San Diego since 1981. Over more than four decades, the company has served as a steward of this section of the waterfront, and it is now leading the large-scale revitalization effort under a new 50-year lease agreement with the Port. The extended term underscores a long-term commitment to the marina’s role in the regional boating and recreation ecosystem.
While detailed phasing, delivery timelines and specific design elements have not been disclosed, the redevelopment framework centers on modern marina infrastructure and enhanced public access. As work gets underway, the project is expected to reinforce Harbor Island West Marina’s position as a key gateway to San Diego Bay for both the boating community and the general public.
