**Cox Castle, Bay Area Council Laud Extension of Key Brownfield Redevelopment Law**
Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP, in collaboration with the Bay Area Council, announced that Assembly Bill 961 (AB 961) — a pivotal piece of legislation they championed — has been officially signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. The legislation extends the California Land Reuse and Revitalization Act (CLRRA), a cornerstone legal framework that Cox Castle attorneys have used for over two decades to assist clients in addressing environmental risks associated with redeveloping brownfield sites.
The extension enables developers, public agencies, and communities to continue utilizing CLRRA’s robust framework for liability relief, regulatory coordination, and cost recovery. Cox Castle and the Bay Area Council played key roles in advocating for the bill’s passage and maintaining essential support for environmentally sustainable land redevelopment efforts throughout California.
Cox Castle attorneys were central to the original drafting and adoption of CLRRA in 2004 and have remained leaders in its ongoing application.
“AB 961 preserves a proven and effective pathway for safe, sustainable land reuse, ensuring it remains accessible to developers, communities, and environmental stakeholders across California,” said Robert Doty, a San Francisco-based partner at Cox Castle. “We’re proud to have worked alongside the Bay Area Council to champion this important legislation.”
