Vanderbilt University announced on Monday that the New York State Attorney General has granted the necessary approval to move forward with the lease of its new campus in New York City. This marks a major milestone in the university’s partnership with the General Theological Seminary, enabling the Nashville-based institution to officially operate on the seminary’s historic Chelsea campus.

“We’re grateful for the attorney general’s approval and the recognition of what Vanderbilt can uniquely contribute to higher education in New York,” said Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. “A substantial presence in New York City will allow us to create new opportunities for our students, faculty and alumni in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. It will also enable us to foster deeper collaboration with the city’s unparalleled industries and cultural institutions.”

Vanderbilt is currently exploring both academic and non-academic initiatives for the new campus. The next regulatory step involves obtaining approval from the New York Board of Regents, through the New York State Education Department, to offer academic programming at the Chelsea location.

This expansion signals Vanderbilt’s growing footprint beyond Nashville and its commitment to fostering innovation and connectivity in a global urban environment.
