CVS Opens First of 64 Former Rite Aid Stores in the Pacific Northwest

CVS Health Corp. has officially opened the first of 64 retail locations it acquired from Rite Aid in the Pacific Northwest. The inaugural store, a former Bartell Drugs location, is situated in Newcastle, Washington at 6939 Coal Creek Parkway SE.

This opening marks the beginning of a major regional expansion for the nation’s largest pharmacy chain, which includes converting 20 former Bartell Drugs stores. CVS plans to have all 64 stores across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho operational by October, as part of a large-scale integration effort following its acquisition of the Rite Aid portfolio.

The purchase of these stores was approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court as part of Rite Aid’s corporate restructuring. With this acquisition, CVS is nearly doubling its presence across the three states, increasing its total store count to over 130 in the region.

In parallel with this expansion, CVS has announced plans to close 270 underperforming locations nationwide in 2025. The company is also committing $20 billion to enhance its digital infrastructure and expand its healthcare services, underscoring its continued transformation into a broader health services provider.
