**San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie Introduces Local Housing Bonus Program to Support Development**

In a move to address San Francisco’s housing challenges, Mayor Daniel Lurie has introduced Housing Choice San Francisco—a new local housing bonus program designed to offer an alternative to the state’s current density bonus initiative. The proposal is part of a broader legislative package aimed at rezoning key areas of the city to facilitate expanded housing development.

The Housing Choice program offers market-rate developers multiple pathways to fulfill affordable housing requirements. These options include building affordable units onsite, paying into an affordable housing fund, dedicating off-site land or units, or fully developing 100% rent-controlled buildings.

This initiative is complemented by Mayor Lurie’s larger rezoning proposal, known as the Family Zoning Plan. The plan recommends updated height and bulk zoning regulations to support a broader range of building types and increased housing density. It also introduces new strategies to encourage residential development near public transit hubs, including changes to parking minimums and density rules.

According to the mayor’s office, the Family Zoning Plan is designed to help San Francisco meet state housing requirements while giving the city more control over where and how housing growth occurs—preserving the character of its unique neighborhoods in the process.

This legislative package marks a significant step in San Francisco’s efforts to tackle its housing shortage while maintaining local oversight and adaptability.
