"Collaboration between Eversource and BXP for Enhanced Energy Program in Cambridge"

Eversource and BXP have officially launched the Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP) with a groundbreaking ceremony. This innovative transmission project aims to meet the growing demand for electricity in the region, improve the resilience of the grid, and support electrification and decarbonization efforts.

One of GCEP’s key components is Eversource’s first underground substation, which will cover 35,000 square feet – making it one of the largest in the country. The substation will be located 105 feet below new public green space at BXP’s Life Sciences Center on Cambridge’s former Kendall Center Blue Garage site.

Bryan Koop, EVP for BXP’s Boston region stated that “The GCEP exemplifies a successful partnership between public and private entities to address an important community issue.”

In addition to constructing this underground substation, Eversource will also install eight new 115-kV underground transmission lines spanning over 8 miles through parts of Cambridge,Somerville, and Boston. Furthermore, the project includes upgrades to five substations in areas such as Allston/Brighton,Cambridge,and Somerville;as well as building48 new distribution lines.

This collaboration between EversourceandBXP marks an exciting step towards creating a more sustainable energy future for GreaterCambridge.
