The Conroe City Council has implemented a temporary development moratorium in the northern part of the city, citing water shortages as the reason. The moratorium will last for 120 days and includes a halt on accepting, authorizing, and approving new developments in order to address potential water scarcity.
While residents will only be affected by irrigation restrictions during this time, developers will face more significant consequences. According to Community Impact reports, areas affected by the moratorium include all of northern Conroe except for Panorama Village and certain subdivisions such as April Sound. Additionally exempt from these restrictions are Montgomery County Municipal Utility Districts (MUD) Nos. 3 and 4.
To address these issues with water infrastructure, it is estimated that approximately $50 million is needed. Councilmember Howard Wood believes that past decisions regarding overdevelopment have contributed to this challenging situation facing Conroe.
In light of these concerns about water supply limitations in certain parts of the city, Conroe has enacted a building moratorium until further notice.
