The Power Up New England proposal, submitted by the six New England states through the competitive Grid Innovation Program’s second round, has been awarded $389 million in federal grant money. This initiative aims to improve and modernize the shared power grid in the region.
One of its key components is upgrading points of interconnection in Southeast Massachusetts and Southeast Connecticut to accommodate up to 4,800 megawatts of additional offshore wind energy. Additionally, a multi-day battery energy storage system will be deployed in Northern Maine to increase grid resilience and optimize renewable energy delivery.
These investments will provide numerous benefits for New England residents such as access to thousands of megawatts of clean offshore wind power, greater resource diversity, increased reliability, lower consumer costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. According to Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s office,
these funds from DOE are crucial for advancing clean energy and climate technology efforts in the state.
Governor Healey expressed her gratitude towards DOE for their recognition and support towards this important project that will create jobs while promoting cleaner air for all residents.
