According to recent reports, X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, will be shutting down its San Francisco offices. In a statement to employees, CEO Linda Yaccarino announced that the closure will take place over the next few weeks and all San Francisco-based employees will be relocated to Palo Alto where owner Elon Musk has his offices.
This decision marks an end to X’s long-standing presence in San Francisco since its founding in 2006. The company had been operating out of their 1355 Market St. office since 2012 after receiving special tax breaks along with other tech companies in the Mid-Market neighborhood.
Sources have reported that due to the pandemic, several major tech tenants such as Uber and Zendesk have already moved out of Mid-Market in recent years. With X’s departure from this area also imminent, they are now responsible for approximately 800,000 square feet of office space at their current location on Market Street until their lease expires in either 2026 or 2028 according to sources from The San Francisco Standard.
