Finegold Alexander Architects is proud to announce that two of their projects, the Lower Basin Barracks and The First Church of Christ, Scientist, have been honored with the prestigious 2024 Preservation Massachusetts Paul & Niki Tsongas Awards for exceptional historic preservation. These awards recognize Finegold Alexander’s expertise in preserving and revitalizing significant architectural landmarks.
The Lower Basin Barracks project involved a comprehensive renovation of a deteriorating 1908 facility spanning over 15,000 square feet. Through careful planning and modernization efforts, Finegold Alexander was able to meet the current and future needs of the State Police while maintaining the building’s historic character. Notable features such as original wood window frames and an iconic tower with copper bays were preserved.
Similarly impressive is The First Church of Christ, Scientist project which encompassed a massive restoration effort on its Neoclassical and Romanesque Revival structures totaling over 192,000 square feet. Working alongside Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Shawmut Design and Construction,and other partners,Finegold Alexander successfully restored both exterior elements like ornate domes as well as interior details including original Guastavino semi-domes.The extensive restoration took place over eight years.
