Winning Big Apple Brownfield Award: Taystee Labs Redevelopment

Janus Property Company and VHB Engineering announced on Friday that the Taystee Lab Building in West Harlem has been selected as the 2023 Big Apple Brownfield Award recipient. This award recognizes its significant contribution to local economic development through job creation.

Jerry Salama, principal of Janus Property Company, expressed his appreciation for this honor: “The Taystee Lab Building has been truly transformative. It has completely revitalized the growing Manhattanville District by connecting Columbia University and City College with the world-famous 125th Street Arts and Culture Corridor.”

The mixed-use project includes 11 stories with 342,000 rentable square feet allowing commercial, nonprofit community facility, research labs, academic and manufacturing uses to be built on a former bakery site that had lain vacant for 40 years before NYC Economic Development Corporation acquired it through foreclosure. Janus was then awarded redevelopment rights of this property by EDC.

This recognition is a testament to how successful projects like these can help stimulate economic growth within communities while preserving their unique character at the same time..
