The State of Washington has acquired a recently shuttered for-profit psychiatric hospital in Tukwila, owned by Tennessee-based Acadia Healthcare, as part of an ongoing effort to expand its mental health system. The $29.9 million purchase was funded from the state Department of Social and Health Service’s current budget and will prevent the loss of treatment beds amid a long-running shortage in psychiatric care options. Prior to closing due to pandemic related business losses, Cascade Behavioral Health facility had 118 beds available for patients.
Governor Jay Inslee’s administration is continuing its efforts to reshape and increase capacity within Washington’s mental health system with this purchase; however, it will not be opened at full capacity or serve the same patient population as before closure. This acquisition marks another step towards providing more accessible services for those suffering from mental illness across Washington State
