Walmart has brought a new Pharmacy Central Fill facility online in Litchfield Park, west of Phoenix, as part of its strategy to reconfigure how prescriptions are processed across its store network. The newly opened operation spans 100,000 square feet and is intended to function as a high-capacity regional hub.
The facility is located at 6600 N. Sarival Avenue, Suite 130, in Litchfield Park. From this site, Walmart plans to support prescription fulfillment for more than 700 of its retail stores across 12 western U.S. states. The Central Fill location is designed to handle up to 100,000 prescriptions per day, indicating a focus on large-scale, back-of-house processing rather than front-of-store pharmacy services.
Walmart is positioning the facility to shift core prescription processing tasks away from individual stores and into a regional, centralized environment. The Central Fill model is intended to free up in-store pharmacists to spend more of their time on direct patient services rather than mechanical fulfillment work. According to the company, the broader prescription-processing network is designed to allow store pharmacists to concentrate on counseling, immunizations and other clinical offerings while the regional hub handles routine tasks.
The Litchfield Park operation integrates pharmacist oversight with automated equipment that performs multiple steps in the prescription workflow. The automated systems locate vials, count pills, label and cap prescriptions, and sort orders for distribution to stores. Human pharmacists retain oversight of the process, while the automated components are used to increase throughput and standardize tasks that can be mechanized at scale.
This Arizona facility is part of Walmart’s existing Central Fill network, which now numbers six sites with the addition of Litchfield Park. The new location joins five other Central Fill facilities that were already in operation before this opening. Collectively, these sites are intended to provide coverage for the company’s national store base.
By the end of this year, Walmart expects that 90% of its U.S. retail stores will receive support from the Central Fill network. As more prescription volume is routed through regional facilities such as the Litchfield Park operation, the company is seeking to standardize prescription processing and enable consistent service levels across a large footprint of retail pharmacies.
