Walgreens’ VillageMD, a chain of clinics offering virtual, home and office visits, will be exiting the Illinois market by April. This decision is part of Walgreens Boots Alliance’s cost-cutting plan to reduce at least $1 billion in expenses. The majority-owned subsidiary has six clinics in the state – five standalone and one co-located with a Walgreens store – which are set to close by April 19.
This move follows similar exits from Indiana and Florida earlier this year as part of Northbrook-based Walgreens’ efforts to streamline operations. As they have faced challenges with senior leadership changes, cutting administrative costs has become a priority for the company. VillageMD currently operates 680 clinics across 26 markets, many located alongside Walgreens stores. In 2021, Walgreen acquired a significant stake in VillageMD for $5.2 billion.
