Unveiling $700M Climate Research and Jobs Hub on Governors Island in New York

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Trust for Governors Island President and CEO Clare Newman, and SUNY Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis have unveiled plans for the New York Climate Exchange, a 400,000-square-foot campus on Governors Island dedicated to research, education and public programs focused on the global climate crisis. The Exchange will create a $700 million state-of-the art campus that is expected to generate $1 billion in economic impact while creating 7,000 permanent jobs with 100% union labor at prevailing wages. Additionally 4.5 acres of new open space will be added as part of this project.

The Simons Foundation has provided $100 million in support towards this initiative while Bloomberg Philanthropies has contributed an additional $50 million towards its completion. Once operational it is estimated that 600 postsecondary students along with 4500 K12 students plus 6 thousand workforce trainees and 250 faculty/researchers annually would benefit from the facility’s resources which also includes an incubator program capable of supporting up to 30 businesses simultaneously .
