Skanska, a leading construction company, has recently finished the Vernier Science Center project at Portland State University in downtown Portland. The building, previously known as Science Building One, has been transformed into a six-story facility spanning 89,500 square feet. It will serve as a central location for STEM education and applied learning with state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and collaborative spaces.
According to Joe Schneider , Senior Vice President-Account Manager at Skanska: “This project is an important milestone for the city of Portland as it solidifies its position as a hub for technology and innovation. The Vernier Science Center will play an integral role in promoting STEM education through its modern facilities including labs, classrooms and collaboration areas.”
In collaboration with Bora Architects , Skanska engaged Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) students during the design process to ensure that their needs were met while also celebrating their cultural backgrounds. As part of this $62.8 million three-phase project undertaken by Skanska , Stratford Hall was demolished followed by relocation of existing research and lab services into nearby buildings.
