University Health Acquires Shuttered Christus Santa Rosa Hospital for $71 Million

University Health has finalized the $71 million acquisition of the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, which has been closed since April. Officials from Christus cited the facility’s outdated infrastructure as the reason for its closure.

The hospital is the centerpiece of a sprawling 45-acre campus that also includes two medical office buildings and a multi-level parking structure. University Health has announced plans to invest an additional $20 million into modernizing the nearly 40-year-old facility. Renovations will include updated equipment and facility upgrades to support its transformation into a center for inpatient and ambulatory care. Part of the strategy involves relocating non-critical services from University Health’s main hospital to the newly acquired campus.

This acquisition comes amid continued expansion efforts by University Health, including the construction of two new hospitals—one in South San Antonio and another in Selma—to address the region’s increasing demand for healthcare services.
