The University of California at Berkeley has started construction on a new 23-story student housing tower intended to expand on-campus living capacity and respond to strong housing demand from its student population. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the project is expected to alter the local skyline while providing more than 1,600 additional beds as the campus works to address a persistent shortfall in available student housing.
Known as the Bancroft-Fulton Student Housing project, the development is rising at 2200 Bancroft Way near Durant Avenue. When completed, the tower is projected to exceed the height of the nearby 185-foot office building at 2150 Shattuck Avenue, based on UC Berkeley development reports. The residential building is planned to reach 276 feet, remaining shorter than the university’s historic Sather Tower while still representing a significant new vertical addition to the area.
The project is being developed by UC Berkeley Capital Strategies, with Clark Construction serving as the general contractor. The plan calls for a high-rise residence hall designed to accommodate a large student community, with a program that emphasizes both living space and academic support. The tower will be organized to provide housing density near the core campus while integrating shared amenities intended to support daily student life.
Planned features include a two-story dining hall to serve residents, along with study lounges on each residential floor to provide dedicated spaces for coursework and group projects. Additional amenities will include social lounges, laundry rooms and a fitness center, creating a range of in-building options for recreation and daily needs. The building is also expected to include a central courtyard and bicycle storage to support active transportation and outdoor use.
The development will incorporate roughly 19,500 square feet of open space, which is planned to complement the tower and its common areas. This open space component is intended to give residents access to outdoor gathering and circulation areas directly connected to the housing complex, while helping the project tie into the surrounding campus and neighborhood fabric.
UC Berkeley’s current schedule anticipates completing construction by summer 2028. The university expects the building to be ready for student occupancy in time for the 2028-29 academic year, positioning the project as a key piece of its long-term strategy to expand on-campus housing capacity and better align supply with growing enrollment-related demand.
