Tucson House, the largest public housing project in Tucson, has been granted a $50 million Housing and Urban Development grant to renovate its outdated high-rise. The 17-story building was constructed in 1963 and currently provides homes for over 450 seniors and residents with disabilities.
The grant will also be used to fund three additional “affordable, mix-income housing” developments; one of which includes converting an old motel into public housing. Originally built as a luxury apartment complex in 1963, Tucson House began to decline during the 1970s before it was purchased by HUD who converted it into public housing during the 1980s. Since then there have not been any significant renovations done on the building until now when plans call for introducing assisted living services as well as amenities such health clinic, grocery store and cafe.
This renovation is sure to bring much needed improvements that will benefit both current tenants of Tucson House along with future residents looking for affordable living options within their community
