Tropicana to Make Way for A's Stadium

The historic Tropicana Las Vegas Resort is set to close on April 2 in order to make room for the construction of a new baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics. The resort, which will celebrate its 67th anniversary on its final day of operation, will be demolished in the coming months.

According to reports from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Bally’s – who currently owns and operates the casino – has confirmed that demolition of both the casino and hotel will take place before site preparation can begin. Once formal plans are approved, construction on what is being referred to as “Las Vegas A’s Stadium” is expected to commence.

The land where Tropicana currently stands and adjacent property designated for use by GLPI (Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc.) have been earmarked for redevelopment. While it has been announced that a new version of Tropicana will eventually be built at this location, there are still uncertainties regarding how it may coexist with a proposed 33,000-seat ballpark.

Before any demolition can take place however officials must first complete an inventory check which includes counting all chips, tokens, cash, and machines as well as inspecting rooms, cages, kiosks, and vaults.
