The iconic Tower Life building in San Antonio is undergoing a transformation. A collaboration between developers Ed Cross, Alamo Capital Partners, McCombs Enterprises, and J. Jeffers & Co., the 95-year-old office will soon be converted into a mixed-income apartment tower. The project has already begun with crews working to convert the building’s interior into 244 residential units and street-level food and beverage spaces along the River Walk.
To accommodate incoming tenants, additional doors and windows will be installed throughout the building’s exterior. The first six floors of the former Sears store have high ceilings that will be transformed into modern urban loft apartments.
The redevelopment is expected to take approximately 20 months under general contractor Alamo System Industries.
Designed by renowned architect Atlee B. Ayres just before the Great Depression, this Gothic Revival structure was once San Antonio’s tallest until it was surpassed by Tower of Americas in 1968.
This exciting conversion project at Tower Life marks an important step forward for this historic landmark in downtown San Antonio.
