"Thompson Center Receives $6M Makeover Approval from Google"

The historic James R. Thompson Center in Chicago’s Loop will soon undergo a major transformation, as Google has received approval from the city to demolish and renovate the building’s exterior and atrium. This is just the first phase of Google’s $280 million project to turn this former state government building into their new Chicago headquarters.

According to reports from the Chicago Sun-Times, this demolition work will cost an estimated $6 million. Permits reveal that Google plans to remove the metal and glass facade on this 17-story property located at 100 W. Randolph Street.

Google purchased the Thompson Center for $105 million in 2002 with a build-to-suit agreement between them and JRTC Holdings for redevelopment purposes; ultimately, Google will become sole owners of this unique postmodern dome structure designed by renowned architect Helmut Jahn back in 1985.
