The state of Texas has allocated $1.5 billion for the construction of seven new psychiatric hospitals, which will be overseen by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). These projects are currently in various stages of planning and design, with construction expected to begin in late 2024.
One hospital receiving a significant portion of this funding is Terrell State Hospital, with a budget totaling $573 million. This facility will replace an outdated 139-year-old building that is unable to adequately meet patients’ needs. The new hospital will have 250 beds and feature therapeutic spaces as well as separate areas for adult and minor patients. Additionally, it will include upgraded maximum-security measures to ensure patient safety.
Another project included in this initiative is the North Texas State Hospital located in Wichita Falls (pictured). This facility carries a price tag of $452 million and will have a total capacity of 200 beds. It will consist of 24 maximum-security beds, 136 non-maximum-security beds, as well as dedicated units for adolescents and civil cases. Other hospitals are also planned for Amarillo, Lubbock, Harlingen, and El Paso.
