### Texans Renting Longer, Favor 3-Bedroom Homes

Texas renters are staying in place longer, with three-bedroom homes emerging as the preferred choice, according to a recent Point2Homes study. The report, which analyzes renter tenure trends from 2017 to 2022, highlights a shift toward long-term renting while the number of tenants relocating within a year continues to decline—Texas being no exception.

Nationwide, nearly one-third of all renter households reside in single-family homes, a segment that is expanding in Texas as more renters seek stability and additional space. In major Texas metro areas such as San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, McAllen, and Austin, over 50% of house renters prefer three-bedroom layouts—surpassing the national average of 47%. Texas is also leading the country in rental home construction.

The study further reveals a nationwide rise in long-term renting, with the percentage of renters staying five or more years and ten or more years increasing by 2 and 2.7 percentage points, respectively. In Texas, the trend is even more pronounced. The share of renters remaining in their homes for ten or more years has grown by 3.3 percentage points in El Paso, 3 points in San Antonio, and 2.8 points in Houston, all exceeding the national average.

As long-term renting becomes more common, Texas continues to adapt to this demand by providing more rental housing options tailored to the needs of tenants seeking stability and space.
