San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is embarking on a $2.6 billion project to modernize and expand Terminal 3 West. The existing 650,000-square-foot western half of the terminal will undergo renovations, including seismic retrofitting and an expanded security checkpoint. Additionally, new passenger amenities will be added to enhance the overall airport experience.
The project also includes the creation of 200,000 square feet of additional space for expanded food, beverage and retail options. This section is expected to open in fall 2027.
One major aspect of the project is the addition of three gates specifically designed for wide-bodied planes – something that SFO currently lacks. In early 2028, a seven-story building will also open as part of T3 West’s expansion plans. This building will house SFO operational offices as well as airport lounges.
