Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton, the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team has been forced to temporarily relocate after the storm’s high winds tore the roof off Tropicana Field. As a result, the team is currently playing its games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the spring training facility of the New York Yankees. The total cost to repair the damage is estimated at $55.7 million.

The St. Petersburg City Council is expected to vote this week on formally approving a $22.5 million guaranteed maximum price for the repair work. The remainder of the cost will be covered by the team. Rays officials aim to have the roof fully restored and the stadium operational in time for the 2026 season.

Hennessy Construction Services is leading the repair efforts, focusing on structural restoration and addressing water damage within the facility. They are working in collaboration with AECOM Hunt, a firm known for its expertise in sports facility construction.

In a related development, the Rays recently announced the cancellation of a proposed $1.3 billion stadium and entertainment district project.
