The State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University Hospital in Brooklyn is moving forward with a major $1.1 billion modernization project, Governor Kathy Hochul announced this week. The initiative, which now enters its design phase, will address key infrastructure updates, modernize inpatient rooms, expand the emergency department, and introduce a new hospital annex. The annex will include an ambulatory surgery center designed to enhance cardiology and oncology services.

Previously facing potential closure, SUNY Downstate Hospital was granted a reprieve through a June proposal developed by the SUNY Downstate Community Advisory Board. Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature later approved $750 million in capital funding for the hospital as part of the FY 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 Enacted Budgets. Over the course of the project, SUNY also plans to allocate $50 million annually from its capital funds to further support the initiative.

“Every New Yorker deserves access to high-quality health and medical care, and this investment at SUNY Downstate will ensure that Brooklyn will have a world-class institution available,” Governor Hochul stated.

The modernization aims to transform SUNY Downstate into a revitalized healthcare facility serving the growing needs of the Brooklyn community.
