**Sugar Land Acquires Historic Imperial Sugar Refinery for Redevelopment**
The City of Sugar Land has officially acquired the property of the former Imperial Sugar refinery, marking a major step in the city’s efforts to shape the future of the landmark site. City officials stated that public ownership of the property empowers Sugar Land to guide its redevelopment and ensure long-term success.
In a significant move, the Sugar Land City Council approved up to $50 million for the acquisition and the restoration of the site’s historic structures. Among the key features is the iconic 100-year-old Char House building, a well-known symbol of the city’s heritage.
Once used for sugar refining, the Char House currently stands as a structural shell with no interior floors. The redevelopment plan aims to transform the building into a vibrant mixed-use facility with eight 9,500-square-foot floors designated for office space. The concept also includes restaurants on the first and fifth floors and a rooftop bar.
Other sites slated for redevelopment on the property include a 26,000-square-foot, three-bay warehouse ideal for potential retail, restaurant, or entertainment tenants, as well as an engineering building and three large silos.
Sugar Land finalized the acquisition by purchasing half of the property from Dhanani Private Equity Group and the other half from the Hunton Group.
This initiative highlights the city’s commitment to preserving its history while promoting economic growth through thoughtful, community-driven development.
