A 30-story student housing project has broken ground in West Campus, at West 24th and Rio Grande streets, the former site of Cain & Abel’s. Austin-based architecture firm Rhode partners designed the 340,000 square foot high-rise which will be the eighth Villas Student Housing in West Campus. The building includes two levels of below-grade parking, three levels of above grade parking and 25 levels of apartments with an indoor/outdoor fitness center, pool spa and basketball court. Project completion is anticipated for summer 2025.
The iconic college bar was becoming surrounded by student housing before its relocation down the street following demolition in April 2021 after 30 years serving Texas Tea to students from around Austin area colleges and universities .
