A redevelopment initiative is moving forward for a senior housing community in Needham after Affordable Housing and Services Collaborative, Inc. and The Peabody Companies secured state funding for the project. The funding will support the overhaul of the Linden Street Community, an income-restricted property originally constructed in the 1960s and 1970s and currently configured as 76 studio apartments for lower-income seniors.
The existing community will undergo a comprehensive renovation program designed to modernize the property and upgrade its usability for residents. According to the project team, the work will be carried out in two distinct phases. As part of the redevelopment, apartments are slated to be reconfigured into larger living spaces, with a focus on improving overall comfort for residents while maintaining affordability.
Plans for the updated property, to be known as Linden Terrace, also call for full accessibility throughout the community. The redevelopment will introduce complete accessibility measures and updated amenities, reflecting current standards for senior housing design and functionality. The intention is to preserve and improve the existing affordable housing resource rather than replace it, while addressing the physical limitations of a mid-20th-century asset.
Linden Terrace is being developed by a partnership that includes the Needham Housing Authority, Affordable Housing and Services Collaborative, and Peabody Properties. This public–nonprofit–private collaboration is focused on sustaining the long-term viability of the community for lower-income seniors. Representatives of the development team emphasized the role of the Needham Housing Authority in initiating the effort to upgrade and extend the useful life of the property.
The state funding for Linden Terrace is part of a larger allocation announced by the Healey/Driscoll administration. In total, the administration awarded $278 million to 20 communities across the Commonwealth to support housing-related projects. According to the announcement, this represents the largest single round of such state awards in more than a decade, underscoring a significant public commitment to affordable housing investment.
For the Linden Street Community, the awarded funding is expected to enable the transition from aging studio units to a modernized senior housing environment with improved accessibility and amenities. While specific construction timelines and financial details for the Needham redevelopment were not disclosed, the initiative highlights the use of state resources to reinvest in existing affordable housing stock serving older residents.
