South End Affordable Housing Preservation Projects Receive Awards for Preservation

MPZ Development LLC has been recognized with the prestigious 2024 Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award by Preservation Massachusetts for their exceptional work on the redevelopment of 34 East Springfield St. in Boston’s South End neighborhood. This project, which provides affordable housing for formerly homeless veterans, is a shining example of transformative preservation that benefits communities.

Working alongside The Narrow Gate Architecture, Epsilon Associates, and ZVI Construction, MPZ successfully restored the historic Italianate-style rowhouse while also creating five one-bedroom apartments (including one handicap-accessible unit). Funding from various sources such as HUD’s VASH Program ensured that these units will remain permanently affordable.

According to Mathieu Zahler, principal at MPZ Development: “Our team prioritized preserving this South End rowhouse’s original features while also breathing new life into it after years of abandonment. Through excellent collaboration and careful planning, we have created a thoughtful and well-balanced project that honors the past while envisioning a bright future.”

This recognition highlights how preservation projects like this can make a positive impact on communities without compromising historical integrity or affordability.
