Skender, a leading construction company based in New York and known for its expertise in revitalizing properties, has successfully completed the interior and exterior renovation of Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments located at 1000-1038 W 14th Street in Chicago’s University Village neighborhood.
In 2022, Jonathan Rose Companies acquired this deteriorating property from the Chicago Community Development Corporation as their first project in the Chicago area. Skender was chosen as the general contractor for this project along with Grund & Riesterer as architect, WT Group as mechanical engineer, RTM Engineering as civil engineer,and Rockey Structuresas structural engineer. Tandem Ventures also played a crucial role by managing regulatory compliance and creating local employment opportunities during the course of this project.
The extensive renovation took place over an 18-month period which involved upgrading energy efficiency and improving quality-of-life for residents through rehabilitating all27 buildings comprising of272 units. According to Erik Amos,Sr.Project Manager at Skender,”the most challenging aspect of an occupied rehab project is planning for resident relocation.” This required constant communication between all parties involved including owners, contractors,relocation coordinators,the tenant council,residents,and city agencies such asthe aldermen.
