Skender has wrapped up a 230,000-square-foot interior buildout for Invenergy at One South Wacker Drive, expanding and upgrading the company’s headquarters in Chicago. Serving as general contractor, Skender was tasked with transforming Invenergy’s existing space and building out additional floors to support the firm’s growth and operational needs. The project centers on Invenergy’s role as a major player in power infrastructure and provides an updated workplace environment aligned with its global operations.
Before the expansion, Invenergy’s headquarters occupied floors 18, 19, and 20 in the building. Skender completed upgrades to those three floors while also handling the demolition and full construction of five additional floors. Following the work, Invenergy now occupies seven floors at One South Wacker, reflecting a significantly enlarged headquarters footprint within the building.
The project team included several specialist firms working alongside Skender. Lumen Workplace served as the owner’s representative, coordinating on behalf of Invenergy throughout the project. Partners by Design was the architect on the assignment, and Syska Hennessy provided engineering services. Together, the team delivered the headquarters buildout and renovation in three phases over the course of 12 months.
The completed space features an open-office concept designed to support collaboration and flexible workstyles. A three-floor atrium stair connects key levels within the headquarters, improving internal circulation and visual connectivity between teams. The headquarters program also includes two roof decks that provide outdoor space for employees, as well as a large café intended as a central gathering and amenity area within the office environment.
At the core of the new headquarters is an 8,000-square-foot state-of-the-art control center dedicated to managing global power markets and operations. This control center is a critical operational hub for Invenergy and is integrated into the broader office layout. Commenting on the project, Jacob Boyle, project executive at Skender, noted that the goal was to deliver a workplace that reflects Invenergy’s culture, ambition, and commitment to collaboration, underscoring the strategic importance of the new headquarters buildout.
