Skender has begun construction on a new phase of The Moorings of Arlington Heights, a senior living community at 811 E. Central Road in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Serving as general contractor, the firm is overseeing a significant campus expansion for the community, which is operated by Presbyterian Living.
The project will add a five-story building totaling 172,000 square feet to the existing senior living campus. When complete, the new structure will introduce 70 independent living apartments, broadening the range of residential options available on site as part of a larger expansion and repositioning effort.
The independent living residences have been designed by Perkins Eastman with open-plan layouts aimed at supporting contemporary retirement preferences. Units will range from approximately 1,050 square feet to 1,900 square feet and will offer one- and two-bedroom-plus-den configurations. This mix is intended to give future residents flexibility in how they use and furnish their space, while remaining within a senior-focused environment.
Beyond the residential component, the new building will feature a social and wellness area intended to support everyday interaction among residents. This interior space is being programmed to encourage engagement, offering a central hub within the building where community life can take place alongside health and wellness activities.
The campus expansion also includes a series of outdoor improvements designed to complement the new independent living units. Plans call for enhanced walking paths, an expanded pond, a sitting area, and additional outdoor amenity space, together creating multiple options for residents to spend time outside and connect with the broader campus setting.
Commenting on the direction of the project, Brian Skender, Senior Project Manager and Team Leader at Skender, noted that senior living communities are increasingly expected to function as integrated campuses combining housing, dining, wellness, and long-term care offerings. The work at The Moorings of Arlington Heights is positioned within this broader shift toward more comprehensive senior living environments.
The expansion is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2027, at which point the new independent living apartments and associated amenity spaces are expected to be delivered as part of the reconfigured senior living campus.
